I’ve received numerous emails and tweets from people who report they’re now downloading the Windows Phone pre-update and NoDo update for their AT&T Samung Focus and LG Quantum handsets. So the April 19 date I reported earlier is apparently correct.
As important, perhaps: I’ve received two messages from people with Samsung Focus phones who used Chris Walsh’s updater tool to upgrade their devices ahead of schedule. And contrary to the scare tactics Microsoft used to bully Mr. Walsh, they both report that they were able to get the additional AT&T software that is being provided today with NoDo. This suggests, but does not prove, that Microsoft was incorrect (and perhaps even lied) when it told Walsh that his updater will prevent phones from receiving future updates. (Publicly, Microsoft said only that the updater might cause issues.)
I updated my own Samsung Focus using a different method, however. And I haven’t (yet)been offered the new AT&T software.

I had upgraded previously to NODO using Chris Walsh’s updater. Today I received a notice about a LG Update for my Quantum. It downloaded and installed perfectly. :)
I use the Chris Walsh update also and it has been running fine since it was posted a couple of weeks ago. I have 40GB of memory on my phone the original 8GB plus a 32 Gb MicroSD with only 6GB of free space. The Zune update took almost 2 hours to do the backup and install but it worked fine. I did lose about 24GB of disk space on my laptop.
Does anyone know where it backup is stored. I would like to keep it but I would prefer to push it off to a DVD and get my disk space back?
The update using Chris’s method updated the OS version from 7.0.7004.0 to 7.0.7390.0 but left everything else the same. The Zune update included updates to the Firmware 2103.10.10.1 to 2103.11.3.3, Radio Software 2103.10.10.1 to 2103.11.3.3 and bootloader 4.10.0.1 to 5.3.1.6.

On Windows 7 it looks like it is C:\Users\\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Phone Update. It looked like it cleared mine though, but I remember it being there because CrashPlan was trying to upload the backup data while the backup was occurring and probably using up most of our upstream at work, so I had to exclude it..
Maybe that data is still in your shadow copies/ previous versions if you don’t see it there. Sorry, I forgot that I brought another laptop yesterday..so maybe the files are still there for me too..
I used Chris’s method on my Samsung Focus (AT&T), and received my notice today. No problems. I think this was a red-herring from MS to try and scare people back in line.
If you de-branded to get it, you can get the Samsung update by re-branding your phone to ATT-US. I can’t speak for the ATT update, though re-branding will likely get you that as well. Seems odd that you can’t easily get just device-specific firmware updates if you’re not carrier-branded, though. Not sure if the AT&T apps will show up in the AT&T marketplace, either. That should be interesting.
I think that accusing Microsoft of “lying” about unintended consequences of using the update workaround is really very harsh and unwarranted, and that the warning is still valid, regardless of the results of the ‘NoDo’ update. Just because the update worked this time, it doesn’t mean that the phone isn’t still ‘contaminated’, and that problems may arise in the future due to the unapproved update method.
Think for a moment what happened with the first rollout of ‘Nodo’ to Samsung Focus phones… some minor variations in firmware cased major headaches. If you did the unapproved upgrade, did you get the correct version for your particular hardware? Are you possibly missing bits and pieces particular to your phone, will you be missing drivers or have the wrong ones, will the ‘unapproved’ installation result in a failure in the future.
I think of this situation as similar to that of putting Apple OSX on a regular PC. You can get it to work, but is it 100% correct? Maybe yes, maybe no. It works now, but will the next upgrade break your Hackintosh?
If you did the unapproved upgrade, the sensible thing to do is to reset and reinstall the whole OS on your phone. But whatever happens, if you are using a hacked phone and you encounter problems in ANY way, you have ZERO right to complain about anything.
Here or elsewhere?
I’ve said that Microsoft has lied about whether carriers can block updates… because they have.
Here, I’m wondering whether they lied to Chris Walsh because their public statement suggested a less dramatic possibility, but they were very black and white with Walsh.
So what’s “harsh” about that? It’s just honest.
As for the rest of your comment, I am very clear in this very post that the evidence thus far “suggests, but does not prove, that Microsoft was incorrect” about the Walsh tool. This is far less of an accusation than you’re making it sound.
And I couldn’t care less if my “hacked” phone ever gets updated. I’m simply reporting what I did and what’s happened so others will know.
Mole hill, meet mountain.
Look — it’s really simple. MS has had a hard time getting this first update out. They’ve had to fix a bug in the update mechanism (hence the intermediate 7008 build for Focus users), they’ve had to eat a lot of humble pie in blog posts, in key notes, etc. and they’ve had to do a lot of testing to ensure they didn’t cause more brickage.
Your criticism of their update deployment (or at the very least their communication of it) can be defended. Not everyone agrees with you, but you do have some valid points.
But so do they. When you put into perspective the issues they’ve had rolling out NoDo, the last thing they need is one more variable putting phones in a state that they have not accounted for in their test passes. It might work, it might not. They don’t know they answer, and they’re telling you “don’t do it — you might get bricked”.
Now if you still disagree with them or the update mechanism, or the communication thereof, I’d be interested in reading what you disagree with. But accusing them of lying doesn’t seem cool.
Lastly, having successfully applied NoDo I can confirm that it’s nice and all that, but anyone clamoring for it (for example you :P) was clamoring for an update for the sake of an update. No idea what you wanted in it, no specific agenda really — just that Apple updated by X date so MS should also update by X date.
The issue isn’t whether the Walsh updater puts the phone in a certain state. The issue is that Microsoft told the public one thing and then told Walsh something else. This suggests one of two things: Microsoft lied to one of those groups or it literally does not know what effect this tool will have on future updates. Either one is pretty staggering.
>> Mole hill, meet mountain.
???
Yes, we have all made a molehill out of a mountain, simply because the update is pretty much meaningless. All the complaining about not receiving NoDo last February, given what it does, does merit a “Mole hill, meet mountain” shrug.
I don’t understand the mad rush to update the phone to NoDo, resorting to things like “this unknown mystery guy says that you can get it right away if you hack it this way with this tool!” solutions to problems we are not even looking to solve. If NoDo were solving a really urgent problem, then maybe OK… but it really fixes nothing, and resorting to hacks to get the update really boils down to ???.
Paul, you are correct the that Microsoft stance on WP7 phone update schedules is ludicrous, self-defeating, embarrassing and incredibly short-sighted, but by no measure can you accuse them of lying by them warning that applying unpublished patches by undocumented ways might have unknown repercussions down the road. Microsoft is correct in issuing the warning, and they would be remiss not to do so.
I’m just as annoyed about the many deficiencies of the WP7 phone as you are, and really want them solved via individual App and OS patches on a monthly basis, but fighting Microsoft over a warning that doing something may be dangerous to your phone, really doesn’t look like the right battle to fight.
looks like it may still be true:
http://mobilitydigest.com/microsoft-confirms-that-walshied-phones-are-still-walshied-and-wont-get-updates-past-nodo/
Doesn’t seem to matter. MS has to be 100% dead accurate even if they’re just trying to be cautious, and apologize later for said caution, but Paul can say anything he wants and it’s okay.
Put another way, the “anything I want” to say is either an opinion or a fact. So I’m free in many ways that Microsoft is not, of course. My point through this episode is that Microsoft has not been forthcoming (at least) or honest (at worst) about carrier update blocking and now this Chris Walsh tool.
Pingback: NoDo update being sent out to AT&T users
Interesting….Paul can we use your forum here to see what if any differences there are between the base config, and the config after update (in both cases if you already updated with Chris’ tool, and those that didn’t)…for the Focus my default after using Chris’ tool is the same as it was before, minus the OS version. I imagine users updating through Zune are now seeing firmware, radio, and bootloader updates. Would love to hear on this version numbering, and maybe even deeper version numbers if we can get to them. I believe there is a tool you can use to report .Net version, etc….
OS Version: 7.0.7390.0
Firmware revision number: 2103.10.10.1
Hardware revision number: 3.1.07
Radio software version: 2103.10.10.1
Radio hardware version: 0.0.0.3
Bootloader version: 4.10.0.1
Chip SOC version: 0.36.2.0
OS Version: Same
Firmware: 2103.11.3.3
Hardware: Same
Radio Soft: 2103.11.3.3
Radio Hard: Same
Bootloader version: 5.3.1.6
Chip SOC: Same
I updated via the Hungary/VPN hack. Just hooked my phone up like an hour ago and got the notice. This is what I saw:
http://i.imgur.com/GjAQz.png
And it is a little snappier than generic NoDo. Not a huge difference but still noticeable.
If you used the unbranding registry hack to receive the update early, you may need to “re-brand” (set that key back to “ATT-US”) in order to get this one.
Thanks for this.
Will do so when I get home from this trip.
Dude, you are always on vacation! Bravo
No problem.
Update: I re-branded my Focus and connected to Zune yesterday. I received a “Samsung Update” which contains the AT&T-specific features (new address book account type, etc.) as well as some nice firmware changes as reported elsewhere. For those who haven’t previously updated to NoDo, this one’ll be rolled in with the “March Update,” but for those who unbranded and got NoDo early, the extra bits will come separately once you re-brand.
Thanks Paul. I’m updating mine right now through Zune.
By the way, I’ve had an SD card in my Samsung Focus since the phone was released and have had no problems with it at all. I have 36.9 GB and only 1.3 GB free on my phone. The only issue I’ve ever had is that sometime my Focus reboots by itself and boots into the “blank” partition. When this happens I just reboot it again and everything’s fine. This occurred only 1 a week or every 2 weeks.
Looking forward to the new features when it’s finished updating…
Thanks gain.
Just installed the February and March updates back-to-back. No problems. Phew!
I updated my HTC Surround the same way. AT&T’s not planning to update until mid May (#!%^). Rip van Winkle, anyone?
I used the Chevron Updater, and a “Samsung Update” showed up in the Zune Software today. I applied it successfully, and I think it included AT&Ts updates as well. “add an account” now includes “AT&T Address Book” (get there through Settings->email & accounts->add an account). I don’t think the “AT&T Address Book” option was there before today’s update, even after using the Chevron Updater to get to version 7390.
Looking for some evidence of the WISPr-related update, there are no new settings in the “cellular” options, though I’m not sure where anything related to WISPr would show up in the interface, if there’d be any user-facing options at all. (there’s nothing new in settings->application->phone either).
My version info in settings->about shows the following (I’ll point out that I didn’t make a note of what they were before today’s “Samsung update,” unfortunately):
OS Version: 7.0.7390
Firmware revision number: 2103.11.3.3
Hardware rev. number: 3.1.0.7
Radio Software version: 2103.11.3.3
Radio Hardware version: 0.0.0.3
Bootloader version: 5.3.1.6
Chip SOC version: 0.36.2.0
I can verify, AT&T Address book is not in my build which I got through the Chevron updater. And it looks like this update is in fact updating the firmware, radio, and bootloader as a few have mentioned….good stuff! Hopefully someone can find where WISPr resides so we can remove or turn it off (who knows how secure a non standardized protocol is)
It’s possible that all it does is add the AT&T Wi-Fi hotspot codes so that when you have your Wi-Fi radio on, it will automatically connect to them instead and authenticate without requiring any browser login. Probably no need for user-facing changes there.
bioturbonick – I think you havet he right of it. I don’t see any reason to add anything to the user interface. The iPhone platform also has WISPr Wifi authentication with no user interface options. All this does is automatically use the ATT Wifi hotspots without having to log in through the log on page. If you are concerned about security, don’t use open wifi hotspots.
I used the Chris Walsh’s updater tool a few weeks ago to update my Samsung Focus, after which my phone displayed the following version info:
OS version: 7.0.7390.0
Firmware revision number: 2103.10.10.1
Hardware revision number: 3.1.07
Radio software version: 2103.10.10.1
Radio hardware version: 0.0.0.3
Bootloader version: 4.10.0.1
Chip SOC version: 0.36.2.0
I just updated using Zune (after having to go in to the settings and manually check for an update). Now my Focus shows the following version info:
OS version: 7.0.7390.0
Firmware revision number: 2103.11.3.3
Hardware revision number: 3.1.07
Radio software version: 2103.11.3.3
Radio hardware version: 0.0.0.3
Bootloader version: 5.3.1.6
Chip SOC version: 0.36.2.0
I can report the same reulsts as posted above. Seems all is go on the update. I can also confirm the the wispr wifi is working as intended.
On a side note, my phone did not notify me of an update. I plugged it in and ran a scan after reading this blog post and foundteh update.
same here, got the “Samsung Update” package. I have over 12GB of data on my phone so it took a total of about 20 minutes to get through the whole process but everything’s working fine. I’ll be monitoring to see how this update along with the Samsung firmware upgrade are handling my storage card.
My phone had been Walshed and I received a “Samsung update for Windows Phone” today via the Zune software that appears to have delievered at least one of the AT&T specific features. Full details here… http://wp.drewhill.net/?p=1409
I received my update this afternoon. I had previously updated it with Chris Walsh’s updater. Everything seems to be working. This update did change firmware, Radio software and Boot loader versions.
Firmware ad Radio software versions now are 2103.11.3.3
Bootloader is 5.3.1.6
I just got the notification for my Samsung Focus!!!!
i Walshed my phone too and recieved the update today.
The thing i am wondering is can the Walshed phones be reset back to factory condition now in the phones settings. I hope someone checks this out and posts about it. the ability not to reset the phone has worried me the most.
same here, i’d like to factory reset and install an SD card in the future.
I used the “other” method to update my Focus. I simply changed my carrier key back to ATT-US, rebooted the phone then the Samsung specific update showed up in Zune. It also advanced the firmware to 2103.11.3.3
I should also note that the audio issue I used to have where applications like voice search would not work after having an external mic plugged in seems to be fixed.
Like clockwork I could recreate the problem. Plug something into the headphone jack (or use BT ) and listen to audio, pull the cord out and then try to use Bing voice search and the mic would not work. I would have to start a call for just a second to get the mic to switch back over. After that, everything was fine. So far, the Samsung specific update seems to have addressed this as I had the problem pre and post NoDo.
quick question. could you change the carrier key to get access to other carriers appstores?
Weird, updating my Samsung Focus from a Chevron update. My update took a while and failed with error code 801812CE. This concerned me, but I unplugged the phone, it was still showing the update screen and turned it off. Restarted it and it seems fine with the firmware, radio, and bootloader version that everyone is describing above. As well as the ability to add the AT&T contacts list.
So how can you re-brand your phone if the Samsungregistry editor is now revoked? I just restored with my backup through Zune and now my back up seems to be gone as well…..oh boy……
I’m in the same boat–phone locked in unbranded mode. I’m not about to restore to the backup just to infect my Focus with AT&T bloatware.
WISPr isn’t an app and must just have the code for ATT Wireless hotspots. I checked it out at Starbucks and my phone automatically connected to their wifi. I had not added their network previously, so it’s in the update.
My update to the pre-NODO and NODO did not work on the Windows Phone 7 Connector for the Mac on 4 attempts. Ran it through Zune on the Win7 laptop and all was good.
Another thing I just noticed: Anti-Shaking is ON by default in the camera. Finally. I tried changing some other camera settings, but they were lost after exiting and re-entering the camera mode, so it’s not like they made the settings “sticky.” Almost any time people complained about the camera not remembering settings, it was because the user wanted the Anti-Shake function turned on all the time. I’m sure most people would prefer it actually save any and all of the settings, but 95% of the hassle of this “feature” is addressed by setting Anti-Shaking to ON by default. So… maybe someone is listening?
I noticed the same thing yesterday. I was going to bring it up, but it seems you beat me to it.
I agree with you on Anti-shaking being the issue for most people – it definitely was for me. It would have been nice to give the users the option to set the default for the flash as well though. There’s been more than a few occasions for me where defaulting the flash to always on or always off for the day could have helpful.
I have documented the update with pictures and using 2 sets. one was flashed to NoDo using ChevronWP7 updater. the other one was left waiting for ATT to update it.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/31692912@N07/sets/72157626535645456/
as you can see, both end up with the same firmware, and yes the “chevroned” phone was updated by zune without issues to apply what described to be ATT specific fixes.
Paul you may grab these screens if you want for whatever use you want.
I like the case on your phone – do you happen to recall where you got it? The one I bought from amazon is so rigid, its hard to push the buttons on the side…
His looks just like the one I have on mine, which is BodyGuard. It came free along with a car charger and InvisiShield screen protector when I bought my Focus from AT&T.
The math worked out for me: $30 case (marked down to free) + $30 whole phone protector (marked down to free) + $30 car charger (marked down to free) + $200 phone (marked down to $99) — final bill $99 plus tax.
It’s nice when the math
Hey buddy what is the case that you have on your Focus? I like it. Can you give me a link to it on may be Amazon?
So by the way I received the update when I connected my phone and the updated version numbers match with the folks above. So seems like Microsoft actually lied or tried to scare the shit out of folks for no reason. AT&T and MS are stupid to include these Carrier specific updates with the OS firmware update and screw up in the process… lack of communication that ur phone update is delayed for testing carrier specific shit is the worst part.
Just got my update now that I connected my phone to Zune. I didn’t get any indication of an update before that… AT&T Massachusetts – Samsung Focus
So guys I’m confused…is 7.0.7008.0 the new version or what? I’ve just finished my smooth “update” of the phone today and that was the OS version displayed. Am I good or do I need to try something else?
That’s the # for the February update. Did u run the update again after to get the march update? It should be 7390 now
Before the Samsung update it took me a minute or so per album to sync. Now it takes about 10 seconds for a big album. That rules.
Preface: I have never used the Chevron tool.. I got my Focus on launch day.. I’ve never done anything fishy to the device, no more apps or games than the average user.. My phone has a 16GB Sandisk microSD installed if that matters…
*Excitedly went to update my Focus today after work. Had to plug it into my PC to get the notification (it didn’t pop on my phone)
*Got the 800705B4 error..
*Cleared all history as instructed
*Got the 800705B4 error again…
*Cleared all history again, and rebooted phone and PC just to be safe
*Got the 800705B4 error yet again…
*Used a different USB cable in a different USB port as instructed
*Got the 800705B4 error another time… (are we at four now???)
*Used the Windows Phone Support Tool to try updating which appeared to succesfully work?
*Reconnected phone to PC to do February 2011 update again
*Horray! It worked this time!!
*Reconnected phone to PC to do March 2011 update. Had to manually go to Zune settings > Phone > Updates to get it to find it. It didn’t auto pop up like the February update did.
*1 hour 20 minutes pass… Update is stuck on Step 9 “Rebooting Your Phone” even though phone is 100% rebooted and responsive.
*Close Zune software, unplug phone from PC
*On phone, check Settings > About > More Info… Shows OS 7.0.7390.0 indicating successful update
*Replug phone to PC. Open Zune > Settings > Phone > Update. Indicates my phone is up to date
*Still no pop up or confirmation anywhere that the update was successful. Had to manually go into the phone settings and Zune software to confirm myself. Double check with official Windows Phone changelog to verify version number.
Roughly a three hour process, and I now have the February 2011 and March 2011 Updates!!! On April 19th, 2011…………..
Thank you Microsoft for taking so much time testing things to ensure I experienced a “smooth” update process!!!!
Just got the update (Hawaii). I had trouble with the pre-update (timer issue) and had to resort to using the Support Tool from Microsoft. Once I ran that, the update installed fine.
How do you ‘re-brand’ your phone? I did that method to get NoDo installed. As soon as I updated, the registry editor tool was removed. Do how do I get back in to change it back to ATT-US?
Same issue here I had to go into settings and do a software reset, make sure you have all your photos and everything off the phone first. The downside to this is I cannot use the Cheveron ringtone app now.
After the reset connect back upto Zune and update was found imeadiately. As a note I already have my calendars and contacts tweaked so that when I log into Google, MSN, and Facebook all the stuff I want and none of the stuff I do not shows up. All my sync relationships with Zune were kept and should not be a problem as long as you name your device the EXACT same. (This is important as Paul’s previous instructions said you had to tell the software to forget the Device.) I have reset my phone twice while playing with the different update methods and this has worked for me.
One note I am referring to settings on the “Phone,” not the Zune software.
Updating as we speak.. I am sure like others glad to see. I’m on step 7.. now lets hope the microsoft can roll out these updates faster from now on. hate to see samsung focus get the last of the update roll outs. I’m sure they have learned alot from this whole process.
Is anyone else having the issues that I’m having with the update? Error codes a plenty when updating with Zune. Any help would be appreciated!
http://www.wp7flaws.com/2011/04/nodo-update-part-2.html
My phone lost connectivity with my PC after the second re-boot. It’s now will not connect to my PC and only shows 15MB total memory. So, not your specific problem, but different and exciting problems all my own.
Just noticed this was only pre-update as i looked at others photos on ver number.. did a recheck for updates and found the no-do’s here WE GO!!
To all the people who claimed that AT&T held up this update so long in order to train their support staff.
Lies.
My upgrade failed. On the second reboot my phone lost connectivity with my computer and although the screen kept saying “Rebooting, do not use or unplug your phone,” my phone was up and active and over the course of about 45 minutes received several text messages. However, the drivers for the phone failed to load properly and I received an error that a USB peripheral had stopped functioning. (My wife was sitting on the other side of the couch laughing because I’ve NEVER had a phone upgrade go smoothly)
So, I called AT&T support because, SURELY, the reason why it took four months for me to get this update was so that they’d be prepared for this.
The first support person spent five minutes giggling about my name (I have the unique experience of having almost every combination of my names be registered trademarks of people who are not me) then suggested that I reset the phone to factory specs. After I corrected her that I had a FOCUS, not a Fascinate, that didn’t work. My phone does not show the updated version number, shows that it has 10MB free of 15MB available storage and had just nuked the brand new 16GB memory card I put in it. YAY.
So she passed me off to their “Data Line support,” who told me that she recently had her Android phone bricked by an upgrade gone wrong (I won, I once had an *AUDI* bricked by a software upgrade gone wrong). So, after again explaining that I had a *FOCUS* not a Fascinate she asked me if I was getting the upgrade from the Samsung website. Which meant that she had no idea what I was doing. Not only that, but her script had no idea what I was doing. After I explained what was going on she basically said, “You’re still within the warrantty period, take it back to the store and get a new phone.”
Good thing they did that extra testing. (Also, I am not discounting that I may have borked the upgrade when I reset the phone, but it would have also been helpful if there was any indication on the phone itself that something, *ANYTHING*, was going on also if the AT&T support scripts acknowledged that the NoDo update existed)
Got a new phone. The update went smoothly this time, took about the same amount of time as it took to eat dinner, but I didn’t bother to set anything up prior to the update, so there wasn’t much to be done from a backup/restore standpoint (also, can someone tell me why I can’t have an at will backup utility for WP7? Yeah, it’s awesome that all of my contacts auto populate on my new phone but what about my text messages? How about my applications? Why was Windows Mobile better at cloud backup than Windows Phone? I can go to the Windows Mobile marketplace right now and see what applications I own for my old phones regardless of how I bought them.).
That being said…I spoke to two customer service reps, my sales rep at my local AT&T store and two service techs at the AT&T service center. Number of people who appeared to have any idea what NoDo was: 1. In comparison all of them were aware of a recent Android update (in part because two of them had been burned by it). So, I have to wonder what does “Premier Carrier Partner” actually mean? Your “Premier Partner” holds up your big update for months…then ignores its existance? AT&T is like the bad half of an abusive relationship.
I will never be “offered” the No-Do update.
I’m using the Beta Mac software MS created- why beta? Because the official version is only available in the Mac App store (OSX Snow Leopard only)- I’m not on Snow Leopard, just plain old Leopard. The beta version of the MS WP7 software has the “check for software updates” button blocked/greyed out- I can’t even manually check.
No matter though, I’ve decided to ditch Wp7.
Um. :)
If you have used unbranded your phone “000-88″, how do you rebrand you phone back to “ATT-US”?
Does it matter, anyone getting the update that did the unbranding/VPN trick to get the NoDo update?
Using the same tool you use to change it to 000-88, of course. :)
But once I updated to NoDo, that tool was revoked.
Paul one of the Registry Editors was removed from the phone as unuseable after you get NODO on the device. So you can’t change the KEY again and since you can’t side load with cheveron on NODO the only thing is to reset the phone in the phone settings, then hook it up to PC and it imeadiately finds the Samsung update.
The samsung registry editor tool won’t work. After NoDo, you will get a message that says “this tool has been revoked by Microsoft, please uninstall it.”
In order to get the Samsung/ATT specific updates, you will need to use Zune to restore to 7008, and rebrand the phone to ATT-US using the registry editor (or whatever you debranded with). Once restored, you’ll get a notification for the NoDo update that includes the Samsung firmware updates and ATT specific features.
I had to reinstall the Samsung registry editor anyway, and it did work fine.
I did the unbranding/VPN trick, is it possible to re-brand without a dev account? Since nodo breaks chevron unlocking the samsung registry app that Rafael did got uninstalled itself as not authorized when I tried to run it. I still the Registry Editor icon, but when I run it it just goes black and returns to the app list.
I just did the phone reset and I now see the firmware udpate. Have to reinstall some apps, but not really a big deal. Love the Windows Live contacts and calendar sync, before you know it most of your data is back on the phone.
I did not see the update notice until I actually plugged my phone into my computer. The Zune software opened up and notified me that I had an update.
I ran both the pre-update and NoDo updates without any issues on my Samsung Focus. It took me around 20 minutes entirely. Very smooth.
I also notified my Mom to try it on her Focus and although her pre-update went smoothly, the NoDo update took 3 tries before it completed successfully. During the backup stage (7?) it would error out. Eventually it completed though and has been working since.
I do notice an improvement in app start-up time and the copy/paste is clever. I also notice the many lame AT&T ringtones I have now on the device… well worth the wait AT&T!
I hope Mango comes out much sooner and then I can really start pushing out the platform to more friends. I love the phone, but am hesitant because of the update issues.
Keep up the good work Paul!
You’ve probably already been sent/seen this but in case you haven’t.
No, but thanks. I’ll have to go back and parse what they’ve said previously, but this is very specific.
Yeah, definitely very specific. But I just still have a hard time buying it though. I could see people who changed their branding and never changed it back having a problem but other than that I see no reason why.
Would love for you to get more in depth on this Paul. What exactly does Chevron break that it can’t be updated past 7390? No one has really explained it well to the general public.
I updated my Focus via Zune yesterday, after using Chevron when you posted about it. It would make sense that this Zune update ‘overwrites’ whatever Chevron did.. but if it doesn’t, what’s going on?
Chevron just seemed so harmless. If it really breaks phones forever and ever, someone should let us know exactly what is being broke. :)
Microsoft won’t tell Chris, so there’s no way to know.
From the “Cool story bro” dept.
I have two Focus WP7 phones, one for me one for my better half. On mine I ran Chris Walsh’s updater tool when Paul posted about it, however I did not update my wife’s phone at all.
She was notified yesterday that an update was available (on Zune – not on her phone) and called me to ask why I was messing with her phone. (heh heh) I told her that the update came from the MS mother-ship and that she could just go ahead and do the update. She got an 800xxxxx error and Zune informed her that the update had failed. (I re-ran the updates that evening and she is now up to date) As bigshooter13 said “Smooth” update process indeed.
So I figured I would take the risk and go ahead and run the update on my phone …. flawless installation on the first try. So in my case the Walsh updater will ensured that my phone received it’s update.
Last note, the AT&T address book is evidently not compatible with the Samsung Focus . I’ll try WISPr connecting at McDiesel today, but I’m not getting my hopes up.
Updated two Samsung Focus phones yesterday. Notifications about the updates came up as soon as the phones were connected to the Zune software. No problems during or after the updates. I did not use the jailbreak workaround, I waited for the official update release.
Most if not all the readers of this blog have updated or will update the WP software this week but I do think a large number of the general public that use WP will not update the phone simply because they never connect the phone to the Zune software. I think this also happens with the iPhone. I know 8 iPhone users that have never updated the OS since they purchased the phone. They never connect the phone to iTunes. None of them use the iPhone for music but they do buy a lot of games and apps via the apps store on the phone. I would think this is also true for WP.
I am glad you have this blog and Supersite for Windows. I don’t catch Windows Weekly anymore because I have taken a break from any TWiT netcast since Leo has become too preachy.
It looks like Microsoft has fixed an issue I was having with Windows Phone:
Before, there was a hard limit on the cumulative number of music, picture and video files one could have on their device. If you had more than about 3000 files, it would simply stop syncing. This was a problem for me because I have about 20,000 files (mostly pictures) that I wanted to put on my phone; I had to remove most of my pictures from the sync group.
Now with NoDo on my Samsung Focus, all 20,000+ files are synced and on my phone.
I did not use any unofficial tricks to get the updates; I waited for AT&T to finish testing.
What the update instructions don’t say are:
DO NOT INSERT AN AUDIO CD IN YOUR COMPUTER DURING THE UPDATE!
I did that, forgetting that Zune had grabbed the “play CD” action away from WMP, and the update aborted with a “cannot read important data from your phone” error during step 7. And it started ripping the CD.
This Zune software really is execrable.
Fortunately, I was able to battery-reset the phone, and oddly enough Zune claims the phone is up to date, and indeed copy/paste is there. But I don’t trust the result so I’m going to restore from the backup and try again.
And, in case anyone cares: restore worked, Zune immediately offered the March update again, and it went all the way through. This is an un-hacked phone.
So, whatever other problems they may have had, backup/restore does what it is supposed to.
I updated my Samsung Focus using the “Hungary” method. My wife’s phone, the LG Quantum, was updated today via the regular Zune based method (which went fine). I have yet to receive a notice on for my phone in regards to any further updates, however, it’s early in the update push. Needless to say, after seeing how smoothly the update went on my wife’s phone, it’s somewhat of a whole lot of hub-bub over nothing. My wife really didn’t give a crap about all of this update drama. Her phone worked before and she loved it. Now, she loves it pretty much the same. Go figure.
I bought my Omnia 7 two weeks ago. Received – after connecting to Zune – the february update. But the Nodo update is not available yet. Not sure why and when it will comes. Makes me worry about it…. Simply because my HTC Trophy already received in first half of march!! My location is The Netherlands. One of my friends has the same experience. Weird!

You may already be looking into this, but if you haven’t heard, it sounds like AT&T slowed down the data transfer rate on at least the Focus with their update.. http://thisismynext.com/2011/04/21/att-sneaks-disabled-hsupa-samsung-focus-nodo-update/
I’ve never seen any entity try so hard to be as unlikable as AT&T.
Yeah, I got screwed out of unlimited data because my Focus is my first smart phone and the unlimited data I had on my V9 didn’t allow me to keep unlimited since it wasn’t smart phone unlimited. They are also my ISP (with Comcast being the only other option), and I regularly go way over their upcoming cap on U-verse. I did mostly like AT&T and would frequently recommend them before all of this though..
@Korn1699
I feel your pain. I have fiber *to my house* and after AT&T ate BellWouth, instead of working ontheir infrastructure and making sure I was getting the 6MB download speeds I was paying for (which in the early days would actually reach 9MBs) they decided to cap my neighborhood at 1.5MB download speeds. 1.5MB is actually too slow to be legally advertised as “Broadband.” I, however, still pay the same price. Their new data caps don’t actually affect me as I am averaging a blistering 26Kbps this week, I’ll never hit them (that and after my last round of poor customer service I called up Charter and ordered cheaper, faster internet).
It’s almost like they’re daring people to stay with them.
That’s unacceptable. Without understanding what your options are, I would give them the big “FU” and immediately sign with someone else, preferably a company that would use the fibre lines your present provider installed at great cost.
@Dixon
That is terrible. I haven’t had too much trouble with their speeds here. I pay for 12Mbps and I usually always get around 11.5Mbps. They had offered up to 24Mbps here, although since I moved last summer, they have since taken that option away for me. I had their DSL before that at 4-4.5 Mbps but paying for up to 6Mbps. I was just thinking that I am only about 3 miles from the college that I went to. They have an insane connection there.. I have seen speeds up to 20MB/s (not Mb/s) from there to another Internet2 connection. Too bad there isn’t a way to go through them. The way the bandwidth prices are starting to go though, it would almost be worth it to go for another degree to be able to use their network for most of my stuff instead of my home connection.. I mean that I could then bring my laptops there and use the network. I would probably have to be a student to use it again, since it is locked down pretty hard..unless I taught a class or something there..
I forgot to add that I did have dialup until about 2 years ago though.. I was able to get around it by doing most stuff at work or school. I almost feel like I have to go back to that with these data caps.. Too bad there isn’t a way to download a movie on netflix and watch it later.. :(
Paul.
That’s pretty much what happened.
Sunday I called tech support to see why my speed was so abysmal only to find out I was provisioned for 1/4 what I was paying for. A line tech was supposed to call me back to see why my speeds were slow on Monday. Hasn’t happened.
Monday verified that 1.5M was the fastest speed offered in my neighborhood. Also verified that the $5 “Discount” I get for “bundling” was mythical. I got a quote on just DSL for the empty house down the street, it was the same price as my “bundle discount” of phone/DSL/cellphone service.
Monday night called another ISP, got a package for 25MB down that cost $20/month less than I was paying AT&T, even after the introductory offer is gone it’ll cost $10/month less. (Sadly, even though I’m in a three horse ISP town, nobody really cares that I have fiber to my house except that I didn’t need a DSL modem. Maybe one day.)
I’m running dul wireless networks in my house right now. My new network is showing ~19MB consistently. My AT&T network is still showing dial-up speeds.
Verifying that I can keep my old @bellsouth.net email addresses this weekend, cancelling my service with them on Monday.
They’d been my ISP since 1997. Not only that but I’m a second generation (former) AT&T employee and as someone who watched Southwestern Bell (the one that all the other Bells made fun of. “Taco Bell” they called it) eat all the other RBOCs I kinda called this heinousness. I think when the SWB people kept requesting that we replace our automated testing system with Excel spreadsheets I knew we had trouble.
I updated early using the revised “hungary” method via XDADevelopers.com forum, that forgoes the VPN part (unlocking w/ chevronwp7, debrand w/ samsung registry editor, turn off data connection, check for updates via zune and pull network cable just before it returns with no updates). Doing so, Zune shows the update, you plug back in and update away.
Anyhow, I don’t think you’ll get the Samsung/ATT specific firmware updates if you remain debranded. I could not rebrand my phone after NoDo, because Microsoft kills off the registry editor w/ the update. After ATT’s official NoDo push, I wasn’t getting an update notice for the firmware.
So I restored to pre-NoDo (7008) via Zune, rebranded the phone with the registry editor (which gets restored as well), and then rebranded to ATT-US. Afterward, I updated to NoDo again, and it includes the Samsung firmware updates.
I just did the phone reset, and the Sumsung firmware update showed up.
It appears that the firmware update also seems to solve the microphone issue on the Focus where you lose the mic input after plugging in headphones on the unit.
Not sure, but the GPS accuracy also appears to be better now as well.
Good tip dvlsadvc8!
I got an OTA notification ~12A 4/19/2011. Now I know that works.
