Windows Phone pre-update heads out to Samsung owners, again

Microsoft revealed late yesterday that it has resumed the distribution of what I’m calling the Windows Phone 7 pre-update to owners of Samsung handsets:

Starting today, we plan to resume rolling out the February update to Samsung phones. Meanwhile, we’re continuing to dispatch the update to other Windows Phone models. As has been the case, the software patch is being sent out on a rolling schedule. You’ll see a message on your phone when it’s available.

During the past week the engineering team has pinpointed and fixed problems that were preventing a small percentage of Windows Phones from installing the February software patch.  We apologize again for the delay and continue looking for ways to improve the update process.

I do hope Microsoft realizes how important it is to get this *and* future updates done promptly and correctly.

  2. vhaakmat says:

I hope that we here in the Caribbean (St. Maarten) are getting it too. My carrier here is not officially supporting WP7, all they care about is BlackBerry.

  3. ejlee2006 says:

    Another b/s from MSFT.
    NO WORDS FROM HTC AGAIN…

  4. pergrill says:

Got it. Had no problem updating my Samsung Omnia 7. It took 5 minutes. I’m located in Denmark. Now I will sit back and wait for the next update and when I have got that I will sit back and wait for access to Marketplace. Sigh…. Otherwise. The greatest phone ever.

  5. jkavanagh58 says:

A Samsung handset and an LG handset on my plan and neither has been notified about the update pending… starting to remind me of the Android update experience that I seriously disliked.

  6. mog0 says:

Finally got notified this morning about the update being available on my Vodafone UK LG Optimus 7. Unfortunately it was just as I was leaving home and I’m not going home until late tomorrow night…I know it doesn’t do much but I want my update :-)

  7. sugoidane says:

We’ll see if my second phone from Sammy will update correctly and not brick. :)

  8. mrhappyscar says:

Eagerly awaiting a notification on my HTC Surround on AT&T.

  9. drummerboygreg says:

No update yet for me either. I wonder if any Canadians have it yet?

  10. mesonto says:

    Damn, didn’t work.

    My details are:
•Samsung Focus on Rogers in Canada
    •Phone OS version: 7.07.004.0
    •Windows 7 64-bit SP1
    •Zune Version: 4.7.1.404.0

    error code: 800705B4

Everything looks good until I get this error code at the end of the process.

I am using my original USB cable that came with the phone and it is being plugged in directly to a USB 2 port on my computer (tried all USB ports now), I also have tonnes of free memory on my phone and the computer.

Just finished trying to update it on another computer but received the same error code.

  11. It would be nice if Microsoft would tell us about rolling out the update here in the states AT ALL.

    Hello fragmination.

  12. mesonto says:

All those with a problem like myself: http://bit.ly/eYtlZd (Vocal site on MS)

  13. mrtimsmith says:

Rumor is AT&T is blocking this update, why I’m not sure but at places like xda-developers and various comment sections on tech blogs no AT&T customers seem to have gotten updates. I honestly don’t really care as long as I get the nodo update when it comes out. But this makes it look like future updating is going to be a bumpy ride. Hopefully Microsoft will have a bunch of little updates ready to throw out after major updates in case carriers block the big ones.

  14. jgibo66 says:

Even though it is a small update I hate waiting. Wish they would rollout by timezone like it usually does for xbox.
Paul, is there any indication that if we carrier unlock our phones but stay with our carrier we would get these updates quicker?

  15. cernajose says:

I am sorry to say this but their update system sucks. Why can apple update all of their products regardless of their carrier but MSFT can’t. I understand that hey wanted carries and device makers to customize the OS but those customizations are just apps. What about if I have an unlocked no carrier phone? How do I get my update? Will I even receive an update? I really hope they change this by the end of the year. When they finish an update we should be able to receive it in days not months.

    • ptrkjnssn says:

Unfortunately, it’s not just apps that can be added or changed by the carriers. I was fortunate to win a HTC HD 7 at TechEd in Berlin last year. The phone was O2-branded (UK) which was fine until I realized what they had done with Internet Explorer. Whenever I have the browser open and push the search-button, I’m redirected to Yahoo’s UK mobile site (I live in Sweden so that makes no sense to me). If I’m in any other app or at the start screen, I get Bing-search, so I basically have to leave the browser before I hit search.

I seriously hopes that this setting is overwritten in the first update I get, because that just sucks. I have tried to get a response from Microsoft as to what other settings, besides apps, that operators can change. I have not received any replies though.

    • pergrill says:

I have an unlocked no carrier phone and I got the update yesterday. I’m located in Denmark.

  16. lsobrado says:

I got a focus and nothing yet.

  17. teemark1 says:

Still no update of any kind for HTC HD7. So who’s sitting on it? HTC or T-Mobile?

  18. kabukin0 says:

I got it on the Optimus 7 in Norway today, but I’m not gonna update because :
    a) it has no new features
    b) Windows Phone 7 doesn’t sufficiently test updates prior to rollout

  19. frechp says:

Worked this time on my Samsung Focus. I had performed a hard reset the last time and had even removed my microSD expansion and still didn’t worked. I suspected that MS had blocked the update since Zune wasn’t notifying me anymore. But today, new update! Tried it and it worked! What made me laugh is the last time there were 10 steps, now only 9! And the problematic step 7 “backup” was replaced by a step 7 “updating your phone”. As if the backup step magically disappeared!? Would be rolling on the floor if it still had 10 steps but skipped 6 to 8. ;)

  20. richcoleman says:

Didn’t work for me. When I click update I instantly get UPDATE ERROR with an error code of 8018119B.

    • richcoleman says:

      Here are my specs:

      - Samsung Focus (stock) on AT&T
      - Phone OS version: 7.07.004.0
      - Windows 7 64-bit SP1
      - Zune Version: 4.7.1.404.0 (I get error code 800401FB when trying to check for Zune updates)

  21. cpdjoe says:

Where will the notice that my phone is ready to update come to, my phone directly or the Zune software?

  22. crashfellow says:

I’ve read today there’s continued issues with this update (http://wmpoweruser.com/cursed-samsung-windows-phones-still-having-problems-with-updated-pre-update-update/).

Unsure how they can have an issue with an update on a single brand device especially if they all had to meet a specification microsoft put in place?

I have a samsung omnia and thankfully have not had the issues a lot are having…

    ps: i really wish i hadn’t left iPhone…

  23. markcr says:

Samsung Focus on Rogers here. Original release of the update hung for me at 100% on the back up process (waited 30 minutes at 100% before giving up). This version worked flawlessly for me (around 10 minutes to update – think it skipped the backup step). My phone has a 16gb expansion card with around 15gb of free space remaining.

If you aren’t getting the update prompt under setting on the phone, try connecting your phone with the USB Cable and start the Zune software and go into the updates section (think it is settings, general/check for updates) – this triggered the update for me the first time… won’t work for everyone but should work if you carrier is supporting the update.

    • gfunk84 says:

I’m also on Rogers with a Focus but haven’t had a chance to apply the update yet. The idea that it skipped the backup step horrifies me, in case there was an issue.

I sincerely hope skipping the backup is not Microsoft’s solution to this problem.

I wonder if maybe it skipped it in your case because it detected it already made a backup for this update (even though it would be out-of-date since your last attempt).

  25. Kaushik says:

*sigh* Paul, I think you should suggest to some of your contacts at Microsoft to rename the upcoming “NoDo” update to “NoUpdate” :P Though again, I’ve not yet run into this problem thus far due to the excruciatingly slow roll-out, I fear I’ll never see an update on this device as I’m reading posts on tech blogs everywhere this morning that the update is yet again failing (but not bricking) on our beloved Samsung phones with “error code 800705B4″. Here’s one of the reports (though you’ve probably already read all of them): http://www.wpcentral.com/wp7-support-samsung-update-issues-again

This is quickly turning from a minor hiccup into a laughable PR disaster for the WP7 team! Third time lucky perhaps??

  26. Paul Thurrott says:

You know, I’m not a conspiracy theorist, but I still haven’t gotten this update. :)

    • frechp says:

You probably don’t deserve copy/paste as well! ;)

    • lzandman says:

Did you already do a sync using Zune through a cable. The first week the update was released nothing happened for me. But during the second week I synced my phone using Zune and suddenly I got the update message both in Zune itself as well as on my phone (actually, the update message box on the phone appeared twice, just seconds apart).

  27. litri01 says:

I was giving up hope and then my update for the HD7 from O2 came yesterday. applied with no problems

  28. Telstra in Australia has yet to release the update for the HTC Mozart and LG WP7 devices.

I really resent Microsoft’s decision to let carriers arbitrate the release of updates.

  29. kabukin0 says:

I really do not get why this update is called an update at all. It does NOTHING to your phone, except prepare it for the next update, that is supposed to do something. Why could the updates then not be put together ???

If it’s so that this first update, does something to the phone, this would just be one step in the process prior to the function-adding-update. It really reads in Zune that the update “enhances the experience of updating the phone in the future”, so it is implied that the first update on the phone, is worse than what would be optimal. Splitting the first function-adding update into two updates, really is TOTALLY pointless.

It really is totally pointless to install this first update, as it is only nessecary to install the next update.

This first update is nothing but a waste of time on behalf of consumers.

    • Paul Thurrott says:

Since this enables future updates, I’d say it’s actually pretty important.

      • kabukin0 says:

Yeah, but why make people connect their phone to zune two times, with one, five, or ten weeks inbetween, why not just make it one first update, and not a stupid, “alter some system things” update with a gap to the comming update.

It -must- be due to them beeing insecure about what they have actually made. It must be because Windows Phone 7 is a rushed-to-market product, and now they are doing non-beta customer beta-testing.

NOT a good track record. Not promising for future diversity of handsets and handset makers.

    • richcoleman says:

Probably because they were thinking, “I’m not sure the update system is going to work. Why don’t we just do a ‘nothing’ update and see if it bricks phones or not so we can fix the issues before the real update.”

      • kabukin0 says:

Yeah, that is the only reason I could see, -insecurities about the update working at all.

We are all beta-testers people out there ! I know you paid $500-800 for your phone, but no worries, we are gonna save Microkia from doom ! We are just so in love with theese guys …

  30. It’s been a great run guys, but this slow update schedule, coupled with the fact that AT&T has went to crap in my marked (I dropped a call 30 times the other day), I am moving on. I actually liked Windows Phone. I hope the updates pick up. If they do, maybe I will get another at some point on Verizon.

  31. jasonfer says:

I’m really getting frustrated myself. And I paid full price for this thing. I doubt we’ll see this update this month.

  32. roberthleeii says:

this is sad it is the 5th and i still have not gotten my update. is anyone on att getting it at all?

  33. Mindi B says:

My Samsung Omnia 7 installed the update with no issues at all. :)

I did not get a notification on my phone. I got a notification through Zune once I had plugged the phone into my PC. Once Zune notified me, then an update notice on the phone appeared.

    Now running: Version 7.0.7008.0
    Country: Australia
    Carrier: Optus
    Available storage 6.18Gb free
    Windows 7 64 Ultimate SP1

    • I received the update notification on my Samsung Omnia 7 on 4th March and installed the update via Zune on the 5th. The update went smoothly. I was concerned the update was going to brick the phone as my firmware was on the suspect list, but my fears were unfounded.

The carrier is Optus in Australia.

      • Mindi B says:

That’s what I was worried about too. Although with the second round of problems concerning Samsungs I didn’t recall anyone getting bricked.

A friend at work installed his update without a problem so I thought I’d give it a try.

No issues since :) Let’s hope Microsoft stick to March 8 and start rolling out NoDo.

  34. Paul Thurrott says:

Another day, another lack of updating.

  35. roberthleeii says:

i think i saw somewhere where the att focus was scheduled for Monday to get the update. Microsoft needs some way to get this to people without the carriers evend if those people must have developer unlocked phones.

  36. tnuctihs says:

Samsung Omnia7 updated without any problems. 5GB space on phone and only about 10 apps installed.

  37. raduzl74 says:

Vodafone Romania – LG Optimus 7 updated yesterday, everything worked smoothly, no problem at all.

  38. kabukin0 says:

OK, so I bit the bullet and did the update on my Optimus 7.
Worked flawlessly, but the Windows 7 driver “bong pong” sounds for drivers are not nessecary, neither is the installing driver thing in the lower corner. I do not need to know.

    • kabukin0 says:

Ok so the update screwed my sms system for the day.

All sms’es for today went out after i tried updating fruit ninja, and the phone rebooted itself.

Man is this looking like a beta product now.

  39. drummerboygreg says:

Any idea if the companies are rolling this out alphabetically? If so, it would explain why I haven’t seen the update yet.

  40. nicholas1029 says:

I thought MS said that NoDo was supposed to be out within the first two weeks of March? Their window is almost up and I still haven’t even gotten the pre-NoDo update yet. I have the HTC Surround on AT&T.
