First Windows Phone 7 update imminent?

Wait for it, wait for it…

Pocketnow is reporting that Microsoft has posted a Knowledge Base article about the first Windows Phone 7 software update, suggesting the update is imminent.

I hope so. But it’s not there yet.

With regards to the KB article, it’s about what to do if the software update doesn’t install correctly. There’s not really any new info in there, but it does note that the phone should be charged before you start this process. So keep that phone ready to go, folks. :)

I actually would expect that members of the Windows Phone Developer Program would get early access to the update. After all we have to test our apps against it. For instance it is already known Copy/Paste only works on Textbox controls. So if an app displays text using a different control, the app developer has to alter the app to make that text work with the Copy/Paste feature.

Actually, word is the update has already been rolled out onto the official Microsoft-supplied developer devices (Samsung Taylor, ASUS E600, etc.). The support page could be meant for users of those devices…

That’s a good sign of some movement at least.

Just so annoying that they don’t simply communicate with us. If things are late that’s fine, but this silent tactic from them is not instilling any hope that they’re changing their ways…

What’s this about an Iphone on Verizon? lol Im joking of-course but i will be honest and go on record as saying that the lack of movement on the part of Microsoft is frustrating at the least infuriating at worse. may be Paul was right may be they should stick to enterprise (and windows) and leave the Consumer space to some one better equipped to handle and more willing to placate consumers! the only unfortunate fact in such a scenario would be the sheer lack of choice (apple’s Insane price premium, or googles sheer uselessness!)

Perhaps some caring operator will try to block this first update for its happy customers.

    Just kidding…

  5. Haaaaa…I like how you called the image noupdate. Don’t know if you did it intentionally to mimic “no donuts” but I got a good laugh out of it.

  6. Paul,

Can you explain to me why decent folks like Leo Laporte respect John Dvorak as a tech “journalist”? This guy clearly writes posts for hits and rarely offers any insight into anything tech-related. I seriously don’t understand why people pay for his bad reporting and behind-the-curve knowledge of modern technology. Remember when he pronounced the iPhone would fail? Now he has Windows Phone 7 “dead in the water”.

He’s not a reporter per se, more of a commentator. He’s made a career out of being controversial, the writing equivalent of throwing a grenade in a room.

If this update is indeed launched in January (as the url name of the page informing about it suggests), I would think that Windows Phone is making the european barcelona congress it’s “announcement/PR platform” for Windows Phone 7.

Microsoft was highly present on the same show during launch of Windows Phone 7, and it seems to be an important place to be for everything not-apple in mobile technology. More focused than ces, with big brands beeing present.

I, honestly, would not be surprised if both Nokia and Sony Ericsson joined Windows Phone 7. Nokia has recently had Stephen Elop join in as master-brain, and has hired lot’s of new programmers. Another reason I think it isn’t unlikley that Nokia will go Windows Phone 7, is due to their QT programming stack. This, as I understand it, allows to write code that works on multiple platforms. You write the app, and it can work on Symbian, Android, probably Windows Phone 7, probably Meego, and maybe even Bada and iOS in the future. Depending on the importance of Qt inside Nokia, it might seem as if the company is going to go multi-plattform, and in a way do hardware and software more separatley then they have done before.

If SE+Nokia joins in on Windows Phone 7, it can become a massive push. Nokia is known for, as an example, to buy a whole trainset in 3rd world countries, drive around with it and sell entry-level devices to the poorest people demanding a phone. They are literally everywhere, and they are known for excellent logistics, distribution and handling of production capacity. Sony Ericsson is smaller, but is after all a Sony brand. Nobody expected Sony to do what they have been able to do in the Single Lens Reflex camera market.

I read somewhere that apple phones account for 1,5% of the total number of handsets in use. Such a number will probably give good reason for MSFT to move slowly but steadily with WP7.

Emergency for Microsoft to annonce a GOOD news. I’m not talking about the table issue.

Android has a huge momentum these past few months. Recently, Disney annonced that they will deliver a phone with Android. But more scarry for Microsoft, last week, AT&T annonced that they will pushed the Android platform even more, they did not even say a word about WP7 since they lost the exclusivity of the iPhone.

    Please Microsoft updates us.

Off att wants to push Android devices, that’s ok, MSFT wp7 is here to stay, it will not take over quickly, once there’s more hardware out there and more advertising it will gain momentum shift, let androids enjoy it, this os will be like the winmo, its full of fragmentations and openness that made MSFT to shit it down …

  10. I think Microsoft is waiting for this patch, which I’m sure they anticipated releasing much earlier, to make a second hard push on the phone. People, not just the viewers here, really do like the phone. Last week I went to a Suzanne Vega concert and a woman in the row behind me saw me using my phone and had to know more. She asked it it was an Android, and when I said “no”, and explained, she had a half dozen more questions. In fact, she couldn’t keep her eyes off it, much to the bemusement of her boyfriend/husband. She even asked the model number (HD7) twice. Microsoft has done a good job on the first release, but a couple of the bugs, and unfinished things, do begin to bug you. I’m still loving mine, but can’t wait for a couple of the more egregious issues to be resolved. Hope I get home from work tonight and find it waiting for me, but I have a feeling they’ll announce it a week or so before it actually shows up, so we’re likely in for a bit more of a wait.
