Windows Phone US launch is November 8

I mentioned on this week’s Windows Weekly podcast that the October 11 date people have been tossing around for the Windows Phone launch was incorrect. (Microsoft is holding an annual event in NYC on that day, but it’s unrelated to Windows Phone.) While I don’t know anything about a European launch, I’ve been told by a very reliable source that the US launch date for Windows Phone is November 8.

    Thanks, Paul.

European launch dates will be most appreciated by your London bound readers ;-)

BTW, just for info, I couldn’t post this comment using IE9Beta. Your recommendation sucks! (insert big winky smiley here).

I don’t mind this approximate 30-day delay, if it means some bugs in the OS or hardware are going to be ironed out. Hopefully, it will mean there will be a couple less things for the MS haters to rant about.

  3. romit says:

Don’t you get in trouble with your sources for revealing such things, which I am sure are supposed to be kept secret until they are ready to reveal? This is one, and the iPad apps thing is the other.

  4. interframe says:

Windows Mobile has always historically been surprisingly more successful in Europe than North America, perhaps thats why they may be launching it earlier there.

And I believe Microsoft told CNET that the October 11th date was an event in which Microsoft would showcase Windows Phone 7 devices and possibly announce a release date. I think it is this year’s “Open House” event (they did it last year) in which they showcase Microsoft’s consumer offerings for holiday 2010.

Is this the same as the press event?

    Paul,

I think you said on windows weekly you like the phones with the big screens and that got me thinking about what WP7 phone I am going to buy to replace my iPhone on AT&T because I too like the big screen phones. Do you think/know if AT&T will have a WP7 with a 4.3″ screen at the US launch (preferably from HTC)?

I don’t know anything about individual phones. What I’d like is something that’s very much like the DROID X from a form factor perspective.

  10. Great! Good to hear that the date is right around the corner. Seems there’s some question as to whether or not T-Mobile will be a launch player…any word on when T-Mobile will be offering phones? It would seem odd, with only two possible partners for launch that only one of them would carry the phones, but stranger things have happened.

Even if the Oct 11th event isn’t for WP7 specifically, many are expecting some WP7 devices to make a showing, after that MS can start it’s media blitz for it. Guess we’ll know in a few weeks if anything new is shown or not.

    • Paul Thurrott says:

      Eh.

Every year, Microsoft holds a press event for the “mainstream” press (Playboy, USA Today, etc.) to keep them up to date on what they’re doing. That’s October’s event.

      • sk says:

Haha. “Playboy”? Seriously, thought, blogs like Engadget and Gizmodo seem to be more unbiased than some of these mainstream journalists.

I guess there will be a separate launch event for the US later in October. Microsoft might have wanted all carriers to have launch devices, but either due to technical shortcomings (no CDMA) or general disinterest among carriers (maybe Verizon), this won’t be happening. This might end up being a problem for MS in the US.

      • Paul Thurrott says:

Yeah, Playboy is always part of this. Heck, Good Housekeeping is probably there too.

Paul you have been using the phone for a while now. Have you suffered any freezes or crashing applications? Seeing what Windows 7 was like on release I was very impressed with what MS had achieved and I hope phone 7 has the same success on launch.
