I’m Saying No to the iPhone 4

I posted this over on the SuperSite Blog, but figured it would be of interest here, since the reason I’m not upgrading is that I’m holding out for Windows Phone.

Like ZD’s Matthew Miller, I won’t be getting an iPhone 4 today, or in the foreseeable future. The reasons for this aren’t all that complex, but I feel like I should at least explain it.

First, I do want one. I suffer from the same illogical gadget lust that many of you suffer from, of course. But more specifically, the iPhone 4 just looks like an awesome device, and unlike the 3GS it appears to be a decent upgrade over its predecessor.

Primarily, I guess, I’m not upgrading because Windows Phone is happening this year. I expect to be able to get a phone early, so I can finish my next book (Windows Phone 7 Secrets). And then I expect to use Windows Phone going forward. I’ve been trying to drop the iPhone for over a year now. The thing is, there just wasn’t anything good enough to make me switch. This year, I think, that will finally happen.

More at the original post, of course.

    Good for you!!

I’m holding out for a Windows 7 Phone myself, although I admit that the iPhone was never a consideration for me – I’m simply turned off by the whole “Apple” thing. I was going with a Droid of some kind. I’ll probably go with T-Mobile.

I said no to it as well. iOS4 makes up 95% of the coolness factor for me.

I went to the Apple Store in St Louis and played with iPhone 4 and while it was cool it wasn’t anything vastly diffrent from my new 3GS.

I bought my 3GS in May when Wal-Mart had the price dropped to $97 (Best Buy price matched it) knowing full well iPhone 4 was coming. I chose to buy it then as a way to keep me from wanting the iPhone 4 when it came out.

I almost caved to when ATT offered a credit for people who had just bought the 3GS but chose to stay with the older model.

Can’t wait to see what Windows Phone 7 has to offer later this year.
